From Basrah to San Diego, One Family at a Time
How a grassroots effort in Iraq became a San Diego nonprofit helping women build homes and businesses.
A Foundation Rooted in Basrah
Karma Humanitarian Foundation traces its roots back to 2010, when Ghada Allous founded the organization in Basrah, Iraq, known locally as Al-Karma. What began as a grassroots effort to support families navigating hardship grew into a structured mission: give people the practical tools and direct coaching they need to build a stable, self-sufficient life.
As circumstances changed, so did the reach of the mission. The organization's work eventually followed Ghada to the United States, where it was re-established under its current legal name, Karma Humanitarian Foundation, and found a new home base in San Diego.
Serving Southern California Today
Today, KHF is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in good standing, based in San Diego and serving women and families across San Diego, Orange, and Los Angeles Counties. Our work centers on two pillars: homeownership counseling and small-business coaching, both delivered through direct, one-on-one support rather than generic workshops.
More than 150 women have gone through our small-business coaching program to date, and our homeownership counseling continues to help families navigate a process that can otherwise feel out of reach.
